Known for its basketball prowess and the reigning men’s national champion on the hardwood, Kansas has never had a Heisman Trophy winner. In fact, the Jayhawks haven’t had a player finish in the top 10 for the Heisman since quarterback Dave Jaynes finished fourth in 1973.

As we near the midway point of the regular season, Kansas has become the darling of college football in 2022. From 2010 to 2021, the Jayhawks didn’t win more than three games in any season and managed just seven total Big 12 wins over that stretch.

Through five games, Kansas has already achieved its highest win total since 2009 and has multiple conference wins for the first time since 2008.

At 5-0 and 2-0 in Big 12 play, the captain of the Kansas ship is also starting to garner some attention. A virtual unknown when the season started, quarterback Jalon Daniels has helped the Jayhawks go from laughingstock to Big 12 contender – virtually overnight. Daniels had his worst game of the season on Saturday, but did enough to propel Kansas to a thrilling 14-11 win over Iowa State.

What to Know About Jalon Daniels Heisman Run

Over his first two seasons in Lawrence, Daniels never had more than 860 yards passing in any season. He had just eight total touchdown passes over his first two seasons and seven interceptions.

This season, Daniels has already thrown for a career-high 983 yards with 11 touchdown passes and just one interception. Daniels currently leads the Big 12 in passing touchdowns and in passer rating. With a 95.6 QBR, Daniels leads the entire country.

As excellent as he has been as a passer, Daniels has also been a threat with his legs. His 329 yards is more than triple what he recorded over his first three seasons. He’s done so on 7.2 yards per carry and has found the end zone five times as a rusher. Those rank third and fifth in the Big 12, respectively.

For Daniels to have a chance to win the Heisman – or at least make a run at it – Kansas will have to continue to play at a high level. The Jayhawks have already increased their win total from last year, but for Daniels to make his way to New York, they may have to make a run at the Big 12.

Three of Kansas’ final seven games will come against ranked opponents. Road trips to Norman, Waco, and Lubbock won’t be easy either.
