The NFL preseason schedule kicks off this week, which means the real season is closing in. Week 1 of the league’s regular season starts with a Thursday Night showdown between the two-time reigning Super Bowl champs and the Baltimore Ravens, as Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl odds start to take shape.
That night, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs look to pick up where they left off last season. In 2023, KC went 11-6 and ran roughshod through the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Ravens and San Francisco 49ers to win it all again.
BetKansas.com, as part of our Kansas sports betting coverage, used ProFootballReference.com to see how Mahomes has performed during his career in home openers.
Years | Record | Average | Average | Average | Average INT | Average QBR |
2018-2023* | 5-1 | 68.1% | 283 yards | 2.7 TDs | 0.2 INTs | 114.0 QBR |
*Mahomes didn’t start in his 2017 rookie year
With Mahomes and the Chiefs opening with a huge game against the AFC rival Ravens at home, how should we expect the star QB to play? Here is his game-by-game history in openers:
Oddsmakers at Caesars Sportsbook Kansas have Mahomes and the Chiefs as a 3-point home favorite over Baltimore. Kansas City has -155 moneyline odds compared to +130 for Lamar Jackson and company.
Since making his first start in Week 1 of the 2018 NFL season, Mahomes has gone 5-1 in openers for Andy Reid and company, with his lone loss coming at the hands of the Detroit Lions in Week 1 of the 2023 regular season.
That game saw K.C. fall to Detroit, 21-20. But Mahomes threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns on 21-for-39 passing, adding 90 yards on 23 rushing attempts. That stat line fell just shy of his average Week 1 performance to date.
That’s because the former Texas Tech star has averaged 283 passing yards per game in the Chiefs’ openers since 2018, to go with 2.7 passing touchdowns per contests during that span. In addition to reporting on these trends, BetKansas.com offer the best Kansas sports betting promo codes too.
Mahomes’ best start statistically in Week 1 came in 2019, when he kicked off the first K.C. Super Bowl run of his tenure by throwing for 374 yards and three scores in a 40-26 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
In that victory, Mahomes added 113 yards and a touchdown on 26 rushing attempts to carry the Chiefs to an early season victory. That kicked off what wound up being a 12-4 campaign that was highlighted with a 31-20 win over the 49ers in the Super Bowl.
Fast forward half a decade and Mahomes and the Chiefs are looking to do the same in 2024-25, taking their latest conquest over the Bay Area franchise and using it as a springboard to bigger and better things during the following NFL regular season.
